Dr. Leonard Sax, MD, PhD is an expert in issues of child and adolescent development. He is the author of Why Gender Matters, Boys Adrift, Girls on the Edge, and New York Times bestseller, The Collapse of Parenting.
In this episode of Health & Harmony Dr. Sax discusses why American kids are 14x more likely to be on ADD medication, one simple question you can ask to determine if your child has been misdiagnosed with ADD / ADHD, what country is getting it right when it comes to raising children, and what you can do as a parent to help your child succeed in school and in life.
A Few Key Take Aways: There are more children in Philadelphia alone on ADD medication than there are in the entirety of France. Sleep deprivation can perfectly mimic ADHD, and the appropriate treatment is NOT medication. A study shows that children in the United States are 40x more likely to be diagnosed with bi-polar than in Germany. Children in the United States are 93x more likely to be on anti-psychotic medication than children in Italy. In 1980 fewer than 1% of children were diagnosed with ADHD, now 1:5 American boys and 1:10 American girls are diagnosed. |
