Without a healthy mouth you cannot have a healthy body. Here are three easy ways you can make steps towards a healthier mouth TODAY!
Electric Toothbrush
Electric toothbrushes remove significant more plaque than manual toothbrushes. An 11 year study found that electric brushes resulted in 22% less gum recession.
Use a Water Floss (or Teflon Free String Floss)
Flossing in general is extremely important, but one study shows that water flossers are up to 29% more effective than string floss for improving gingival health. If choosing string floss, opt for options that are teflon free. Another study found that people who use certain types of flosses had 22% higher levels of PFAS in their bloodstream. And another from the EWG found that PFAS exposure is linked to hormone disruption, immune issues, cancer, and fertility concerns – even in very small doses. This is a good teflon-free floss option to consider.
Tongue Scraping
Landis Felts, our amazing hygienist, compares the tongue to a shag carpet. If we aren’t cleaning the tongue, then bacteria settles and stays. One study found that using a tongue scraper reduces volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) by 75%, while the toothbrush only achieved a 45% reduction. To minimize plastic exposure, opt for a stainless steel scraper.
Bonus Tip!!! TOOTHPASTE
Opt for xylitol toothpaste vs. fluoride. Fluoride is a neurotoxin and gut microbiome disruptor. And there is evidence showing significant effects when it comes to children.
Xylitol is a 5-carbon alcohol sugar that creates an alkaline environment in the mouth, in which disease cannot survive. It inhibits the growth of Streptococcus mutant, a major bacteria responsible for tooth decay and plaque. It doesn’t feed bacteria like regular sugar, it helps maintain a natural pH in the mouth which prevents enamel erosion and tooth decay, and it remineralizes enamel. Consider trying a toothpaste like this one.
