When we are looking at the optimal pacifier shape for a baby we want to find one that closely mimics the breast/nipple, and does not remain in the mouth without active tongue activity and suction.
Options like the Ninni and the Philips Avent Soothie are great options.
With both of these options, if the tongue is not active and baby is not maintaining suction, they tend to fall out. This is what we want. Verses a pacifier with a bulbous tip that hooks to the palate.
What to Avoid in a Paci
The orthodontic pacifier was originally created to help alleviate misaligned teeth and orthodontic issues as baby teeth come in, however we know much more now than we did 60+ years ago.
It is actually ideal to wean the pacifier by the time teeth start erupting, and definitely by the time solids are introduced.
“Orthodontic” pacifiers keep the tongue low and flat, which works against breastfeeding and efficient bottle feeding. They force the tongue down, and can create an anterior open bite.
