Most of us eat some sort of meat on a daily basis, and as we all know – what we put into our bodies plays a huge role in overall health. It is important to try and stay away from meat that is pumped full of hormones and antibiotics.
One of the best ways to verify the health of the animals you are eating, is to buy from local farms.
If you live close to the Denton/Sanger, TX area then here are some great local farms to look into:
Circle N Farms – A great family owned farm located in Sanger, TX. They raise hormone free All Natural Beef. They pride themselves on their cattle being raised in a peaceful environment, and never being in a feedlot situation, or given antibiotics. You can order your beef online and pickup from the farm, or shop their mercantile in Krum.
Circle N Family Dairy Farm – This family farm, located in Gainesville, TX focuses mainly on dairy. They sell everything from raw cow’s milk, to ice-cream, to cheeses, yogurts, just to name a few. They also sell free range eggs, raw honey, and Grass Fed Angus Beef. If you have little ones, they also do a great tour of the farm where you can learn where milk comes from, how cows are fed & taken care of, milking & bottle feeding cows, and more!
Fan’s Fryers – Fran’s Fryers specializes in better than all natural chickens that are always raised cage free with no antibiotics ever. Their growers rely on natural probiotics to effectively prevent Salmonella in the chickens. They are also free of harmful chemical pesticides, radiation, hormones and all animal byproducts. Fran’s Fryers does have a minimum order requirement, so many people find it best to order with a group by joining a co-op. You can find a co-op near you here.
If you are unable to buy from a local farm, or there is not one near you, look for labels in stores like “organic,” “exclusively grass-fed,” and “free-range pastured.” Beware of labels like “all-natural,” “hormone and antibiotic free,” and simply “free range,” as these carry no real weight and are not monitored (1). Butcher Box is also a great online subscription meat service.
If you support any other local farms we did not list, please send their information our way. We would love to build our list, and get to know more. Knowledge is power, and healthy living is one step at a time!
